On Music:

Q: In your opinion as a youth pastor is it ok to listen to the Black Eyed Peas?

A: I would have to say that depends on your perspective.  In my perspective as a born-again Christian, I choose not listen to that particular music, because it offends my Savior with its immoral messages and syncopated beat that lends toward sinful behavior.  When one is saved, it is not a matter of what I should or should not do, since we’re not bound by the law of sin or under the penalty of sin, which is death and separation from God in Hell.  Instead now, we are bound by the love to our Savior who died for us.  This constrains us even stronger to obey out of love for our God.  The Bible says, “Be ye holy, as I am holy.” So our continual standard then, is to separate ourselves unto holiness, instead of seeing what we can “get away with.” So in answer to your question, our search must be for the music that is most holy, as Christians.  That makes the criteria a much smaller list. --Pastor Jae

On Lying:

Q: I have a friend who lies a lot and it's hard to know how to deal with that. Can you give me some advice?

A: We must also know whether this friend is saved or not.  If he is not saved, it is natural for him/her to lie, along with a list of all the other sins.  Man is born a sinner (Romans 3:16).  It is then natural for an unsaved sinful soul, to follow their father, Satan, the Father of all lies.  I think sometimes it’s funny, as Christians we expect the unsaved world to act as we do, when instead it comes quite naturally for them to sin.  Without the Holy Spirit’s work within them, we can’t expect any better.  So primarily, it is more important to be concerned with your friend’s salvation, rather than with his problem of lying.  Too many times, we don’t ask the simple question that begs to be asked—“Friend, have you ever been born again?  Are you 100% sure that if you were to die today, that you would go to Heaven?”  The Word of God clearly states that we can know without any doubt that we are going to either Heaven or Hell.

However, if this friend claims to be a Christian, I would enlighten him to Revelation 22, in which a list of the most deadly sins that God hates, lying is among whoremongers and adulterers, murderers, and homosexuals.  A short list of the sins that God destroyed the Earth for in the days of Noah.  This particular sin of lying killed many in the Bible, ex. Annanias and Saphira in Acts. The book of James tells us that the tongue can defile the whole body and is likened to a deadly poison (James 3:6-10). As Christians, one our main jobs is to be bearers of light (Matthew 5).  If we are deceiving others and lying, we are hiding that light, for which Christ called us into high account, and also for which there will be very strict judgment.  As the Bible says, “To him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” (James 4:17)

Secondly, and most importantly, you need to not talk to other friends of yours about this problem, but instead take it to God in prayer if you are truly concerned about this person.  Only God can change a heart, and sin is always a heart condition.  This will then correct one tongue problem with the best tongue solution—prayer. --Pastor Jae
